It works for front and side paths, a route to a back gate, or a link between a patio and a driveway.

How much does a paver walkway cost?

A paver walkway about 40 feet long and five feet wide typically runs $2,700 to $7,250 installed. Hardscaping Specialists can quote a typical range by phone, and the firm figure comes after one of us has walked the route. Where yours lands depends on the pavers you choose and the layout.

The range is wide for a reason. The cheapest version is a straight run over firm ground. Curves, a lot of cut pavers, or a base that needs extra work push it toward the high end.

What makes the price go up or down?

Length, width, and layout move the price most. A wider path costs more than a narrow one at the same length, and every curve, corner, or landing adds cutting and fitting time. The paver you pick and the ground we find once we dig matter too, since soft soil means extra base work before any paver goes down.

Each quote itemizes the dig, base, edge restraints, pavers, and joint sand. A longer path costs more even when it is dead straight, because there is more ground to dig and more base to compact.

What are the steps from first dig to finished path?

Hardscaping Specialists lays out and digs the path, compacts the base, sets pavers on a screeded bed, locks in the edges, then compacts and fills the joints with polymeric sand. Each stage supports the next, so a shortcut early shows up as a dip or loose paver later.

For the bedding we use one-inch screed pipes and a straight screed board, which give a flat, even surface to lay on. We fit edge restraints tightly against the outer pavers and secure them into the compacted base. Without a firm edge, a path slowly spreads at the sides.

For the finish we use a vibrating plate compactor with a rubber or polyurethane pad, so the pavers are not scuffed or chipped. We compact the laid pavers with the pad, sweep polymeric sand into the joints, and compact again. Then we remove the excess sand and lightly mist the joints.

How long does a walkway take to build?

Length, width, and the number of cuts set the pace, so Hardscaping Specialists puts a schedule on the job after walking the path. A short, straight run on firm ground goes faster than a long, curving one with a landing. The wet season, mid-May through late October, is the main thing that can move a day.

The heaviest rain in Palm Beach County usually comes in June and September. A dug-out path with a half-finished base does not hold up under a downpour, and wet weather can interrupt base compaction, screeding, or the misting of the joint sand.

How do you know it's time for a new walkway?

It's time when the way to your door stops being a reliable surface: you step around puddles, the ground is bare and muddy, or the paving is cracked, sunken, or uneven enough to trip on. Any one of those is enough to start planning a replacement.

We also build them where there is nothing yet. If everyone already cuts across the same stretch of lawn to reach the door, the gate, or the patio, that worn line is a good place for a path. When we visit, we look at where people actually walk and where water runs, since a path should follow both.

Does a walkway need a permit in West Palm Beach?

Whether a stand-alone walkway needs one is a separate question, but a walkway that meets or crosses a driveway is worth checking before any digging starts.

If your path touches the driveway side of the property, Hardscaping Specialists sorts out what applies before we start, so the layout is settled before the first pavers go down.
