How it gets done

The exact steps depend on the job. These are the ones that come up most:

• Lay pavers in the selected pattern, using string lines to keep joint lines straight.
• Cut edge and obstacle-fitting pavers with a guillotine cutter or masonry saw, using a wet or dustless saw to limit airborne silica.
• Install edge restraints and spike them into the compacted base to limit lateral paver movement.
• Sweep the installed pavers clean, compact them with a protective pad, and fill the joints with the selected joint material.
• For reinforced segmental retaining walls, install the specified geogrid and drainage system, then place and compact backfill in controlled lifts.
• Mark the patio footprint, then excavate the area and consolidate loose subsoil before placing the base.
