How much does a paver patio cost?

Paver patios run $7 to $20 per square foot. Hardscaping Specialists writes up each West Palm Beach patio as a quote, and the final figure moves with the patio's size, how many cuts the layout needs, and how much the base must do to handle water.

A simple shape with few cuts sits near the bottom of that spread. The top fits a patio with curves, angles or borders, because every paver cut to follow the perimeter takes time at the saw. Drainage work also moves the number, since a base that has to deal with standing water is a bigger job than one laid on ground that drains freely.

Describe the yard on the phone and you will get a ballpark figure from that same $7 to $20 spread. We firm up the final price after walking the site. Square footage, layout and drainage work each get their own line on the written quote.

How long will the job take?

Timing comes down to patio area, cut count, and how the ground and weather behave once we start. Hardscaping Specialists sets a day count after seeing the yard. Heavy rain can stop base work, so we talk through timing with you on site.

Area comes first: a larger patio means more base to compact and more pavers to lay. Shape is next. A plain rectangle goes quickly, while a curved or bordered design means cutting many pavers to fit the perimeter with the saw. Water is the third. Saturated ground or a wet stretch of weather slows the work, because we won't compact and screed a base that is holding water.

Anything we hit underground that changes the plan gets reported to you right away, along with the effect on the schedule.

How do we design the patio before we build it?

Design starts with how you will use the space and where the water goes. We walk the yard with you, talk through the size, shape and layout you want, and look at how rain moves across the ground. All of that goes into the quote, so the patio you approve is the one we build.

Palm Beach County is flat, the soils saturate, and the rain can be intense or last a long time, so ponding is a real risk for any hardscape. We plan around keeping runoff paths clear, and we won't lay a patio that blocks the way water already leaves your yard. Near the coast, storm-surge flooding from tropical storms and hurricanes is a further risk, and it affects what we build and where we place it.

What does the installation involve, start to finish?

The work moves from the ground up. We prepare the area, build a compacted base, set the pavers on it, cut the ones that need to fit the perimeter, and lock the edges in place. The base comes first and gets the most time, because it is what keeps the patio flat.

We compact the base so it can carry weight without settling, then use a straight screed board to get the surface flat and sloped the way we planned before any paver goes down. A surface that is flat but not shaped for runoff is how patios end up holding water after a storm.

Where pavers meet the edge of the patio, we cut them to fit with a masonry saw equipped for dust control, which keeps the cutting cleaner for you and for us. Last, we install edge restraints tightly against the pavers on the compacted base. Without a firm edge the pavers can shift outward over time, and heavy rain and wind during storm season put that edge to the test.

What signs mean it's time to put in a patio?

Look for a patch of yard you'd use if the ground were better: bare dirt, grass that turns to mud, or a worn slab. A paver patio also fits if you want a defined place for seating or cooking and are tired of replacing a surface that wears out.

Water that sits in the yard after heavy rain is a sign the drainage needs attention. We deal with that in the plan rather than cover it over, because a patio on a base that doesn't shed water will give you trouble.
